The Student ((Zahraa Qasim Najim) at the Department of Architecture has been
granted a master degree of Architectural Design on her thesis titled “Religious
Placemaking strategies.”
The discussion was held on Thursday, August 3, 2023, in the Department of
Architectural Engineering at the University of Technology.

The thesis focused on the concept of placemaking within the architectural field on
the basis of its relationship with society, focusing on buildings known as focal
buildings, which include (historical, iconic, and sacred religious buildings) as they
are considered the focal points for society.
The thesis aimed to present the strategies adopted by the architectural designer
with the aim of creating a religious place that enhances its focal character. The
thesis reached the possibility of achieving the focal religious place through a
method of complete loyalty to the original, by applying preservation and
rehabilitation strategies with their various mechanisms, as well as the method of

partial loyalty to the original, and through applying the strategies of encoding,
rooting, and focalisation, according to their different mechanisms.
The study also clarified the method of parallel disconnection from the original,
and through applying the parallel interruption strategy and its various
mechanisms, to conclude the contrast of strategies in achieving balance,
innovation, and achieving focal nature characteristics.
