I am a practicing architect and a lecturer at Department of Architecture, University of Technology, in Baghdad, Iraq, where I – for more than twelve years – acted as a module leader for Architectural Presentation and Freehand Drawing, also served as a member of architectural design studio team. My research, in architecture theory, focuses mainly on aesthetics of architecture and architectural judgement.

I have worked as a chief architect at the private practice Contemporary Design and Building during the period 2001- 2004. I have designed and participated in designing many buildings ranging from private residential buildings to schools, hospitals, commercial buildings, and mosques.

My teaching approach focuses on developing a transparent “research based” method to design. Where students get to explore and approach the design process following and based on an extensive research of the limitations and potentials of each academic project. This exploration then continues to the methods of form production and presentation. I also encourage students to explore other forms of art and creation and how this investigation can add to their design process approach.

During my studies for the PhD degree I have completed many modules related to the field of study I am focusing on. These modules are:

  • Research methods and methodologies with special focus on qualitative methods, introduction to Research Ethics, and Academic writing skills, introduction to grounded theory, End note referencing software, and Working with long documents workshop, all as part of the doctoral training scheme at the University of Brighton.
  • Completed a masterclass with Professor Etienne Wenger about the Theory of Communities of Practice as part of the ARENA project.
  • Completed a course about the use of CAQDAS (computer added qualitative data analysis software) focusing on (NVivo) At the Department of Sociology, University of Surry, United Kingdom.

  •  Doctoral Students Forum, April 2018, at the University of Brighton, United Kingdom
  • A workshop on the architectural competitions current practice in Iraq at the University of Technology, Iraq

  •  The Nordic Journal of Architectural Research NJAR.
