Architecture is defined not only as a science, but as a passion, creativity, talent, and work in addition to being an art: it is the art of design. Architecture is a branch of art and design, and it is also a branch of engineering that deals with aspects of design, building and construction.

The science of architecture is meant to be a science of design and construction to meet the physical person need for  housing, or intangible needs such as security and safety, as this is done by using both building materials and appropriate construction methods. The architecture is also closely related to urban design and urban planning.

Architectural  engineering is the dealing with the whole form of architecture , aiming at maintaining  the safety of the building . The architect work starts by imagining  the shape of the design , modeling it then building the planned design. The  architecture includes of the following subjects: design, building and  construction, taking into account air conditioning, lighting, construction and computer design, as well as old buildings restoring  and preserving the architectural heritage.

The (Bachelor) degree in the Department of Architecture at the University of Technology includes one scientific branch, which is Architectural Design. The student graduates after completing five academic years divided into ten semesters. Each semester includes an actual study for a period of 15 weeks, in addition to a practical summer training period, then the student graduates after Completing 183 study units divided into 3855 actual hours, of which 1515 are theoretical hours and 2340 practical hours. After completing the study requirements, the student is granted a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering.

The Department of Architecture developed a strategic plan that clarifies its scientific and specialized method as an educational institution with a priority of  providing the local and global labor market with scientific competencies specialized in all the aspects of architecture and construction, starting from planning urban design, then the architectural design of buildings to the implementation of buildings through architectural engineering of the building.

This plan included the implementation of the academic programs developed for the educational branches since the year 2020-2021 through the acceptance of students of the first stage, which is general to all, in which the student becomes acquainted with the basics of design and planning to build the urban environment.

The three branches work to achieve the department's vision to  provide  trained scientific and accredited competencies according to the standards of internationally attested educational programs to cover all aspects of urban environment building from planning to implementation.

Therefore, the scientific branches were suggested as follows: 1- Urban planning and design.

 2- Architectural design. 3- Building and Environmental Engineering.

The three branches also work to achieve complementarity in supplying the labor market from various specialties  interested in urban aspects, as well as to approve their academic programs  by international accrediting institutions .

The vision of the architecture department is based on the nature of the architectural graduate specialization, architecture is a comprehensive base knowledge in which all the intellectual, cognitive, methodological and applied dimensions of architectural design are combined  with the help of the latest technologies, design methodologies and intellectual education, by enhancing the department’s mission towards teaching architectural design with modern mechanisms and techniques through building a new Iraqi urban reality.
